Akron Neighborhood: Mow To Own | Akron City Of - Department Of Neighborhood Assistance
Provides residents the opportunity to acquire unused city lots by mowing vacant parcels near their home and maintaining the property for a period of time. Must maintain the property from the time the contract is signed through property transfer/closing. NOTE: Maintenance may include mowing, cutting, weeding, snow shoveling, litter removal, raking leaves, and other seasonal upkeep.

Application process
- Visit https://summit-county-oh-publicity.tolemi.com and select "Mow to Own" under "Programs" to view available lots and to fill out an application. - Application must be filled out online and approved to begin process. Once the City receives the application, the City will review to determine eligibility.
Fee
No fee to apply. Must pay standard closing costs (estimated around $100) at time of property transfer/closing.
Eligibility
- The opportunity will be first given to neighbors who are adjacent to the vacant lot. Priority will be given to applicants who own and occupy a home immediately adjacent to the eligible lot. - Eligible to acquire vacant lot for free mowing and maintenance of the property from time period of signing contract through closing. - If no one acquires the vacant property, then a property owner no more than 300 feet from the lot may be eligible. Successful applicants must: - Be current on their own real estate taxes. - Not have properties with maintenance, nuisance, and/or building code violations. - Must have any rental properties registered with Akron's Rental Registration Program. Additional Eligibility: - Non-profit organizations may also be eligible to apply for the program under the following conditions: - Must be a 501(c)(3) organization. - Property must be in their service area. - Not delinquent on any real estate. - Not have properties with maintenance, nuisance and/or building code violations. - Must have any rental properties registered with Akron's Rental Registration Program. - Priority may be given to the non-profit 501(c)(3) applicant with the best plan for the lot. NOTE: Lot cannot be resold within two (2) years of closing date without written approval from the City of Akron.
