Free to enroll for health benefits; may have to pay fees or co-pays depending on services needed and priority group. In most cases, Veterans that qualify for Medicaid will not pay copays. VA is required to bill private insurers for non-service related services (it is recommended to keep private insurance even when enrolled for VA health services).

Serves eligible veterans. The VA urges all veterans to apply to determine basic eligibility. A veteran includes any person who served in active military service and who was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable as well as active duty veterans and reservists/national guardsmen called to active duty who completed their entire period of duty. Veterans having enlisted after 09/07/1980 or having entered active duty after 10/16/1981 must have served 24 continuous months or the full period for which they were called to active duty. The following categories of individuals have enhanced eligibility for VA health care and have access to more services: former POWs; Purple Heart recipients; Medal of Honor recipients; veterans who have a VA determined service connected disability of 10% or more; VA pension recipients; veterans discharged due to disability, early out or hardship; veterans having served in a Theater of Operations for 5 years after discharge; veterans having served in the Republic of Vietnam between 01/09/1962 and 05/07/1975; veterans having served in the Persian Gulf between 08/02/1990 and 11/11/1998; veterans who were stationed or resided at Camp Lejeune for 30 days or more between 01/01/1957 and 12/31/1987; veterans catastrophically disabled as determined by the VA; veterans whose previous years household income is below VA's National Income or Geographically-Adjusted Thresholds.
