- Must be an honorably discharged Veteran with at least 90 days of active military service beyond training (but active duty service members may qualify). Note: Dependents of Veterans may also apply. - Must be a legal resident of Portage County for 90 days prior to making application for financial assistance. - Considers many factors when determining financial need including income from work, benefits from county, state and the federal government, and the claimant's living expenses and assets. Funeral assistance is only provided for indigent Veterans. - Client can receive assistance as often as determined by the agency on a case-by-case basis.

Documentation requirements are extensive and will vary with service sought. They will include at least: - DD214. - Proof of residency in Portage County for at least 90 days. - A doctor's statement of client's status as unemployable or capable of limited employment. - A pay stubs for the previous two (2) months. For burial assistance, must be able to prove need. All requirements will be explained at initial visit and in the information packet provided.
