Program is designed to prevent sewer backups in single and two-family homes due to surcharging in city sewers from heavy rain or sewer blockages. Program provides installation of an approved backflow prevention device on home sewer lines using an approved plumbing contractor.

Application process

Telephone. Individuals should report sewer backups as soon as they are aware of them, 24/7 to 645-7102. If the property is determined to be eligible for the program, an application will be mailed.

Fee

None, though rental properties are subject to a health and safety city code inspection for a fee of $240 per unit.

Eligibility

Columbus single or two-unit duplex properties with at least one backup verified to be related to a city sewer surcharge or blockage reported to the Division of Sewage and Drainage. Not eligible are backups caused by a private property sewer problem, multi-family properties (larger than a two-unit duplex), non-residential properties and those located outside of Columbus.
