Senior Companion Program | Family And Community Services

Provides part-time opportunities for low-income individuals age 55 and over to assist other older adults and individuals who are homebound who have difficulty completing everyday tasks and continue living independently in the community. Senior Companions offers friendly visiting as well as one-on-one assistance with basic chores such as light cleaning, laundry, meal preparation and so forth. Senior Companions provide transportation and accompany clients to doctors, grocery stores and social events in the community. Senior Companions alert doctors and family members to potential problems. Senior Companions also provide short periods of relief to primary caregivers. - NOTE: No overnight services available.

Application process

Call the office for more information, to request services, or to volunteer to become a Senior Companion. Will return phone messages at staff's earliest convenience. Accepts applications by phone. Staff matches and schedules appointments with potential Senior Companions and clients.

Fee

No fees for clients regardless of income. Volunteers cannot accept tips or gifts. Low-income Senior Companions receive a modest tax-free stipend for their work. All Senior Companions receive reimbursement for transportation, annual physical examinations, meals, and accident and liability insurance during service.

Eligibility

Serves participants age 55 and over and/or individuals with disabilities. To become a Senior Companion, a background check is required. Also, Senior Companions must complete more than 20 hours of pre-service training and monthly in-service training.
