1) Must be at least age 65 or older during the filing year or be permanently and totally disabled or a disabled veteran (regardless of age) or be a surviving spouse (must be at least age 60 at the time of the spouse's death). 2) Must have owned and occupied the home as the principal place of residence on January 1st of the year in which the application is filed. For manufactured or mobile home owners, the dates apply to the year following the year in which the application is filed. Persons who qualified and received the reduction for the tax year 2013 (collected in 2014) will be "grandfathered" and will not be affected by changes that were passed by the Ohio legislature in 2013. New applicants for the 2014 tax year and thereafter will be required to have Ohio adjusted gross income below a certain threshold in order to receive a reduction. The threshold changes yearly.

Description

Provides a reduction in property taxes for eligible senior citizens and disabled homeowners in the county. The reduction is equal to the taxes that would otherwise be charged on up to $25,000 of the market value of an eligible taxpayer's homestead. For example, a home with a market value of $100,000 is billed as if it is worth $75,000. The exact amount of savings varies by location but, overall, homeowners save an average of $300-400 for the tax year.
