Offers financial assistance of up to $2,500 to active duty service members and their immediate families to assist with basic life needs. Eligible expenses for assistance include: - Housing Expenses: Mortgage, rent, minor repairs and homeowner's insurance. - Vehicle Expenses: Payments, insurance, and repairs. - Utilities: Electric, gas, heating fuel, water, and primary phone. - Food and incidentals. - Childcare. - Medical Bills: Patient's portion for necessary or emergency medical care. Note: Unable to assist with financial emergencies.

Application process

Apply online at www.vfw.org/UnmetNeeds by clicking on the Unmet Needs application. Submit online application and all required documents. Note: Chrome is recommended for the online application. - Applications cannot be completed unless all required fields are met. - Once the application is submitted a notification email will be sent to the applicant with further information. - Unmet Needs caseworkers review applications and contacts the applicant if necessary for any additional required documents or information. - All expenses are verified with the creditors. Payments are sent directly to the creditor to ensure proper disbursement of funds.

No fee to apply. Gives all grant money directly to the creditor and not to the applicant.

Eligibility

Serves applicants that current service members or eligible dependents listed under the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS.) Offers financial hardship assistance that must be due to: - Currently on active duty, whose financial hardship is a result of a current deployment, military pay error, or currently pending being discharged for service-related injury/illness. Note: Hardship cannot be caused by civil, legal, or domestic issues, misconduct, or any issues that are result of spousal separation or divorce. Hardship cannot be caused by financial mismanagement by self or others, or due to bankruptcy. Ineligible Expenses: - Military debt/repayment or tuition assistance debt/repayment. - Taxes. - Rentals of any kind, such as Furniture, electronic equipment or vehicle rentals. - Cable, internet, secondary phones. - Credit card debt of any kind. - Any other expenses not determined to be a daily necessity.
