Eligibility

Households must:

  • have an income at or below 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines
  • be responsible for their home heating costs
  • have received a past due or disconnect notice if electric/gas customer
  • be within 4 days of running out of heating fuel (coal, fuel oil, propane, kerosene, or wood) if bulk fuel is heating source
  • have received an eviction notice citing unpaid rent for households whose heating costs are included as an undesignated portion of their rent

Households meeting eligibility criteria can reapply each time they experience a crisis until they reach their maximum benefit ($400).

Required documents

Other documents (Account number and name on the account for main heating fuel sources and electric bill),Social security card (Proof of Social Security Number or Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) for each member of the household),Utility bill (Most current heating bill, statement from landlord if heating expenses are included in rent, or statement from utility company if applicant participates in a Pre-Pay Electric Program),Proof of income (Proof of income from the previous month for all household members)

Application process

Virtual appointments may be scheduled by phone or online. Walk-ins accepted for in-person service.

Fees

No fee to apply. Households will still be responsible for energy charges beyond the assistance provided by the crisis program, if any.

Description

Offers seasonal utility bill payment assistance to eligible households facing a home heating emergency, such as imminent loss of heat, low fuel supply, or eviction due to unpaid utility bills. Applications for assistance are accepted between January 6th and March 27th, or until funds are expended.
