COMMUNITY BLOOD CENTER / COMMUNITY TISSUE SERVICES
Community Blood Center/Community Tissue Services (CBC/CTS) is a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit, tax-exempt corporation. Operating income is derived mainly from processing charges to the hospitals for blood components and services, tissue grafts and services. Community Blood Center (CBC) began operations in September 1964 in the basement of the Fidelity Medical Building on South Main Street in Dayton. It was the result of a need for a centralized system of blood banking to collect, test, process and distribute blood to efficiently and effectively serve patient needs in an era of growing medical complexity. Today, CBC serves 25 hospitals in 15 counties in southwestern Ohio and eastern Indiana. CBC has a blood branch in Springfield OH. In November 1986, CBC expanded its operations and started a local tissue bank. Community Tissue Services is a full service tissue bank that recovers tissue, processes the tissue into grafts, and distributes it to those in need. Today, CTS has recovery and/or distribution branches in Fresno, California; Indianapolis, Indiana; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Toledo, Ohio; Portland, Oregon; Memphis, Tennessee; and Fort Worth, Texas; in addition to the Dayton and Kettering headquarters. There are also recovery branches in Boise, Idaho, and Medford, Oregon.
