Licenses for drivers of vehicles are for Ohio residents, aged 15 and 1/2 and older. Renew a license or state identification card online is restricted to drivers aged 21 to 65 who already have a four-year license.
Must present documents to prove all the following five elements: (1) Full legal name: current first (given) name, middle name, and last name (surname) without the use of initials or nicknames (Birth Certificate, Passport or Passport Card can be used). If name on documents does not match the person's name, must present the document (original, not a copy) that states the name has been changed (2) Date of birth (Birth Certificate, Passport or Passport Card can be used). (3) Social Security Number (SSN) (SS Card, W-2 or tax form, or 1099 Income Statement can be used), if ever assigned (4) U.S. citizenship OR U.S. legal presence (Birth Certificate, Passport or Passport Card can be used) and (5) Residential street address in Ohio (Official Business or Official Government Document with home address can be used). Applicants that cannot provide proof of an Ohio street address through accepted documents may use a "Proof of Ohio Residency-Certified Statement" form. A dependent child may have address confirmed by a parent or guardian who has proof for the same address. Satisfactory proof of identity, Ohio residency, and relationship of the parent or guardian to the child applicant is also required. Non-US citizens are required to provide proof of legal presence. Proof of residency will be required to renew an identification card if there is a change of address not reflected on the expiring card. NOTE: for Compliant ID Card must present TWO documents from different sources proving Ohio Street Address that are listed on the Acceptable Document List are required for proof of Ohio residency. Extensive list of documents meeting requirements is available on agency's web site. Two types of documents are accepted as primary and secondary documents. Documents that typically include date of birth are called primary documents. Acceptable primary documents include: birth certificate: accepts only an original or certified copy with a seal, issued by an appropriate government agency. Must contain gender. Must contain the full name and date of birth of the applicant Concealed Weapons Permit: accepts valid Ohio issued permit with photograph military identification: accepts a valid United States military service or dependent identification document with photograph Offender Release Card: accepts valid card issued by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction or DYS Department of Youth Services containing the person's photograph, name, date of birth and Social Security number State-Issued Driver License or State ID card: accepts documents from any state, territory or possession of the United States, with photograph, current or expired not more than six months State-Issued Learners Permit: accepts documents from any state, territory or possession of the United States, with photograph, current or expired not more than six months United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) Documents: accepts original and valid, or like documents issued by the successor agency to the USCIS Valid Passport: accepts a valid United States Passport or United States Passport Card, with photograph or a passport with photograph from another country accompanied by appropriate USCIS documents any other genuine and reliable document approved by the BMV Registrar. Documents that typically might include a Social Security Number (if not on primary document) are called secondary documents. Acceptable secondary documents include Bureau of American Indian Affairs Card or American Indian Treaty Card: will not accept a tribal Identification card Certified Copy of a Court Order: accepts a certified copy of a court order with or without the date of birth Credit Card Department of Human Services Card: accepts document with or without photo employer Identification Card: accepts document with photograph foreign birth certificate: accepts document accompanied by an approved translation if the birth certificate is not in English gun permit: accepts document with photograph health Insurance Card: accepts current and valid document Internal Revenue Service or State Tax Form: accepts document issued by the appropriate governmental agency within the last 3 years marriage certificate or marriage license medical records: accepts documents from a doctor or hospital military dependent identification: accepts valid document military discharge: accepts separation papers motor vehicle title: will not accept vehicle registration pilot's License Public Assistance Card issued by a governmental agency certified school record or transcript Social Security number, but not a metal card student Identification card: accepts document with photograph issued by a recognized school or university voter registration card W-2 Wage and Tax Statement: accepts printed document. Must contain full Social Security number 1099 Form: accepts printed document. Must be one of the following types: SSA-1099, 1099-DIV, 1099-G, 1099-INT, 1099-MISC, or 1099-R. Any other genuine and reliable document approved by the BMV Registrar.

May also walk-in for service, may visit website and use the "Get In Line Online" feature - The system allows customers to “Get in Line, Online” before arriving at one of their local deputy registrars. After checking-in online, customers have a four-hour window to arrive at the deputy registrar location, check in at a self-service kiosk, and claim their spot in line. A separate appointment with the State Police will be required to take the road portion of the test. Ages younger than 18 must walk in to apply during listed site hours with a parent/guardian. If applying for a motor vehicle license, must have fee for permit packet. Vehicle owners and licensed drivers must attest to adequate insurance coverage. All new driver license will be received by mail about 10 days after renewing or applying at a Deputy Registrar agency.

Fixed fees. Temporary permit packets are available for a fixed fee also.

Tests and licenses drivers and renews licenses as they expire. Issues temporary permits (Temporary Instruction Permit Identification cards - TIPIC) for those learning to drive automobiles, motorcycles or commercial vehicles. Provides duplicates of unexpired licenses in the event current documents have been misplaced. Issues documents with correct addresses in the event of a change of address. Two options are available: Compliant - need for air travel or Standard cards (Note: The federal government will no longer consider standard driver licenses and identification cards as sufficient forms of identification for air travel as of May 7, 2025.) Driver's licenses are good for eight (8) years. Renewals are good for feight (8) years.
