Crisis Nurseries | Providence House

Offers non-custodial, residential care in a trauma-informed environment for eligible children. Provides shelter, food, clothing, beds, medical exams, developmental screening, and an educational curriculum. Service includes case management and parent support programming, as well as trauma screening and assessment for children and guardians.

Application process

Referral by agency is preferred, although individuals may self-refer if they meet eligibility. Referrals are made each time a client requests service. The referral may be made by phone or fax 24hrs a day, 7 days a week. If phone is not answered, callers may leave a message that will be returned by staff. Referrals are accepted from any social service agency (including county workers, neighborhood centers, direct service agencies, and shelters), treatment centers, hospitals, churches. Self-referrals must agree to be linked with services to address the family's crisis during the placement of their children. There may be a waiting list for this service.

Eligibility

Serves families who are in crisis (homelessness, domestic violence, parent in drug or alcohol treatment, parent receiving medical or mental health treatment that makes them unable to care for their children, children at risk of abuse or neglect, parent in short-term incarceration (up to 90 days), parent needing emergency respite from caring for a child who is developmentally disabled, or children in process of being adopted). Children, aged birth through 12 years can be accepted. Clients can receive assistance as often as determined by the agency but admission cannot exceed 120 days in a calendar year. Self-referrals are accepted on a case by case basis.

Operates a residential Crisis Nursery for children who are living in high-risk situations requiring immediate intervention. Provides care in a home-like, trauma-informed setting while partner agencies work to stabilize the family crisis or find alternative long-term care for the children. Providence House can provide care for children from 24 hours to 60 days in most cases.
