Installs a compact fluorescent light bulb in client's refrigerator to conserve energy. Meters refrigerator and/or freezer (including deep freezers) energy use to determine if it is an "energy hog." If so, it will be replaced. Not an emergency program.

Application process

There may be times when this program is unavailable due to funding (agency will advise caller when to try back.) Note: CURRENTLY CANNOT HELP THOSE WITH FIRST ENERGY LOOKING TO REPLACE A REFRIDGERATOR - out of funding until 2025. Can visit website to apply or for information - click on the "Housing & Community Services" tab and select "Home Energy Efficiency Services." The application can be downloaded and submitted via hard copy or submitted via the CHN Application portal. NOTE: the "Housewarming Weatherization Program" is also offered on the application. Once application is submitted it can take up to 90 days to process. Will receive a letter convey if they are eligible. Those who are experiencing problems with the appliance they got from this program may contact this agency for guidance (there is no guarantee that this agency will address that issue and in most cases, the client will need to make a consumer complaint with the manufacturer). Can phone for information M-F: 8:30am-5:00pm. Funding for program is received in July of each year and last until funds are gone.

Eligibility

First Energy and Cleveland Public Power customers whose income is at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines. Tenants are eligible for light bulb and refrigerator replacement if needed; electrical panel upgrades are available for owner-occupied homes who have been referred through the Home Weatherization Assistance Program. Assistance is generally provided once in a six-year period, but exceptions can be made. In order to determine whether appliances are inefficient and potentially qualify for replacement, refrigerators must be working (refrigeration system must work and the unit must function enough to register energy usage.)
