Eligibility

Anyone can report cases needing investigation. The adults in need of protection must live in Cuyahoga County, be age 60 and older and be possible victims of physical/emotional/sexual abuse, neglect, self neglect and/or financial exploitation. Will also handle allegations of abuse concerning vulnerable adults ages 18-59 (physical disability, chronic illness, dementia), but the person who the report is concerning must agree to accept assistance. NOTE: Abuse, neglect or exploitation in state licensed nursing homes must be referred to the Ohio Department of Health complaint hotline or the local Long-Term Care Ombudsman's Office. Complaints about State licensed mental health group homes should be referred to the Cuyahoga County Mental Health Board, as well as to APS.

Application process

Phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to report alleged abuse, neglect, self-neglect and/or exploitation. A social worker will document the allegation and begin the investigation process. After office hours (M-F: 8:30am-4:30pm), the Adult Protective Services Hotline is covered by the child abuse hotline. If calling afterhours, clients will need to hold and follow the prompts to speak with Child Abuse Hotline staff who will handle the call. The report will be faxed to APS the next working day . There is no emergency placement overnight, but will suggest phoning other shelter placement or phoning the police to be taken to the hospital. Staff from APS will be paged in urgent or emergency situations. Can also make an report (referral) online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Upon completion of the referral, it will be reviewed by the supervisor of the Centralized Intake Unit, and if appropriate, assigned to an Intake worker for assignment. People making a referral will be contacted and notified that the case was accepted. The person making the referral may be contacted if more information is necessary.

Description

Receives and investigates reports of alleged abuse, neglect, self-neglect and/or exploitation of impaired adults in need of protection. Cases accepted for service are investigated fully, and identified problem areas which may affect the client's well-being are assessed. Adult Protective Services is mandated by Ohio law. Health care staff, social service workers and other professionals are mandatory reporters. Reports may be made anonymously.
