HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION | ROSS COUNTY AUDITOR

Provides reductions in property taxes for eligible seniors and disabled homeowners in the county. Amount of reduction is calculated by exempting the first $25,000 of value on the property in question. Will answer questions and assist with completing forms regarding the reduction. Also offers one-day community events to explain qualifications and to help with completing applications.

Application process

Phone or walk in M-F: 8:30am-4:30pm for information and to pick up an application or ask to have the application mailed. Completed applications are accepted from the first Monday in January to the first Monday in June. Those who received the exemption prior to the tax year 2014 will be grandfathered in and will not have to reapply to continue receiving the exemption. Those currently receiving the exemption who have recently moved should re-apply during the application period with their new address.

Eligibility

Serves Ross County. Serves households with income at or below $32,800. Serves those age 65 or are turning 65 in the year for which they apply. Also serves those who are totally and permanently disabled as of January 1st of the year for which they are applying, as certified by a licensed physician or psychologist, or a state or federal agency. Age limitations do not apply to those who qualify due to disability. Also serves the surviving spouse of a person who was receiving the previous homestead exemption at the time of death, and where the surviving spouse was at least 59 years old on the date of death. Must own and occupy the home as principal residence as of January 1st of the year in which they apply. Those who received the exemption prior to the fiscal year 2014 will not have to reapply to continue receiving the exemption. However, those currently receiving the exemption who have recently moved should reapply during the application period with their new address. They are still eligible and there is no income requirement.
