M. Miller Community House | Family And Community Services

Offers emergency shelter (23 beds) and support services to men, women, and families with children. Provides shelter residents with case management, advocacy, information and referral. Offers an advocate to meet regularly with residents to establish a plan that includes housing, income, education or job training, counseling, financial planning, and other goals. Assists clients who are moving from the shelter into stable housing (such as an apartment) with acquiring household items and furniture.

Application process

Call the office 24 hours a day, 7days a week to check on availability of shelter. If there is no space, client will be placed on a waiting list and will then check-in each day until space opens up. In some cases, bus passes may be available for clients who wish to go to a shelter in Akron (Haven of Rest or Access).

Eligibility

- Serves single adults and families with children who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. - Must be a resident of Portage County (must have lived in Portage County for at least six months and/or have a case with Portage County Job and Family Services). - Income limits apply. - Must be sober, not actively psychotic, suicidal, or homicidal. - Must pass criminal background check. - Must not have active warrants out for an arrest or an open criminal case. - Must have no violent offense charges for the past five years or an extreme history of violent offenses (assault, menacing, etc.). - Must not have any drug trafficking offense within the past five years. - Must not be a sex-offenders.
