DRIVER LICENSES | OHIO BUREAU OF MOTOR VEHICLES

Tests and licenses drivers and renews licenses as they expire. Issues temporary permits (Temporary Instruction Permit Identification cards - TIPIC) for those learning to drive automobiles, motorcycles or commercial vehicles. Provides duplicates of unexpired licenses in the event current documents have been misplaced. Issues documents with correct addresses in the event of a change of address. Two options are available: Compliant - need for air travel or Standard cards (Note: The federal government will no longer consider standard driver licenses and identification cards as sufficient forms of identification for air travel.) Driver's licenses are good for eight (8) years. Renewals are good for feight (8) years.

Application process

Visit website to renew a license or state I.D.. May also walk-in for service, may visit website and use the "Get In Line Online" feature - The system allows customers to “Get in Line, Online” before arriving at one of their local deputy registrars. After checking-in online, customers have a four-hour window to arrive at the deputy registrar location, check in at a self-service kiosk, and claim their spot in line. A separate appointment with the State Police will be required to take the road portion of the test. Ages younger than 18 must walk in to apply during listed site hours with a parent/guardian. If applying for a motor vehicle license, must have fee for permit packet. Vehicle owners and licensed drivers must attest to adequate insurance coverage. All new driver license will be received by mail about 10 days after renewing or applying at a Deputy Registrar agency.

Fee

Fixed fees. Temporary permit packets are available for a fixed fee also.

Eligibility

Licenses for drivers of vehicles are for Ohio residents, aged 15 and 1/2 and older. Renew a license or state identification card online is restricted to drivers aged 21 to 65 who already have a four-year license.
