Offers free tax preparation assistance by a certified advanced preparer for low-income households, particularly those eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit. Can complete returns for back taxes up to three (3) years. Options for tax preparation include drop-off, and in-person. All options require client to begin the process by coming into the building where the appointment is held. No virtual or drive-thru options for 2025. NOTE: Amended 2024 return appointments for returns prepared by United Way of Summit and Medina will be available from mid-April through the summer.

- Summit County: By appointment only. Appointment dates begin January 27th and vary by location. Drop offs accepted on Mondays from 9:00am to 2:00pm by appointment. - Medina County: By appointment only on Mondays from 9:00am to 1:00pm. Drop offs accepted from 10:00am to 2:00pm on the following Fridays (January 31st, February 14th, February 28th, March 14th, March 28th, and April 11th). NOTE: If a client needs tax returns completed for multiple years, schedule one appointment, and bring necessary documents for all years. Prior-year returns will be completed as drop-offs and completed within a week. Note the tax year(s) needing completed in the appointment notes.

Application process
- Beginning Tuesday January 14th, 2025: Call 2-1-1 or visit the website at www.uwsummitmedina.org/vita to schedule an appointment. - Families with a child attending one of the following Community Learning Centers/Schools (David Hill, Helen Arnold, Hyre, McEbright, or North High School) may call their school's Family Resource Coordinator (FRC) to make a tax preparation at the school. Drop-off appointment instructions: - Physically come into the building at scheduled appointment time. - Complete intake paperwork, verify ID, and submit all required documents. - Client will return to sign and pick up completed taxes after a VITA staff member calls to inform client the taxes are complete. - Turnaround time is usually one (1) week. In-person appointment instructions: - Arrive at scheduled appointment time. - Ring the buzzer or bell for entry, if necessary. - Stay with the tax preparer for the duration of tax preparation.

Eligibility
- Serves residents of Summit and Medina counties. - Free tax preparation assistance available to individuals and couples that have an earned income and adjusted gross income (AGI) of $67,000 or less during the 2024 tax year. - Able to assist with self-employment (sole-proprietorships) for households that meet income eligibility. - NOTE: Not able to assist with bankruptcy, foreclosure, rental income, non-cash charitable contributions over $500, virtual currency, farm income, and small businesses with business loss, employees, or inventory.
