Eligibility

- Free tax preparation assistance available to individuals and couples that have an earned income and adjusted gross income (AGI) of $69,000 or less during the 2025 tax year. - Both spouses must be present if filing a joint return. - Able to assist with up to $25,000 in Small Business/Self-Employment Income. - There are some limitations that are beyond the reach of this service such as income from rental property. - Investment income must be $3,500 or less for the year. - Must be able to complete return within the hour appointment time.

Required documents

Bring the following documentation: - Photo ID for the tax filer (and spouse, if filing jointly). - Social Security card, official correspondence from Social Security Administration that includes Social Security number, or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) letter for all people listed on the return. - If Married Filing Jointly both persons must be available to review the tax return. - If anyone on the tax return has been a victim of identity theft and has been issued a 6-digit Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), bring that document to the appointment. - Wage and earning statements such as W-2 / W-2G / 1099-R / 1099-Misc. / 1099-B. - Interest and dividend statements from banks (Form 1099). - Birth dates for all listed on the return. - If divorced, the divorce decree parent custody guide, and if required, Form 8332. - Alimony paid and received, if divorce decree was finalized December 31st, 2018 or prior. - Documentation of total paid for child care, and child care provider's Social Security or Employer ID Number. - Documentation of educational expenses (such as the 1098-T Tuition Statement). - Any other relevant tax information about income and expenses, including any correspondence received from the IRS. - If receiving a refund by direct deposit, documentation of bank account number and bank's routing number (a voided check is acceptable). - If possible, bring a copy of last year's tax return.

By appointment from Tuesday January 20th 2026 through Monday April 13th, 2026 as follows: - United Way of Greater Lorain County located at 642 Broadway Avenue in Lorain (44052): Monday, Tuesday and Thursday: 4:00pm to 8:00pm. - Elyria Public Library System West River Branch located at 1194 West River Road in Elyria (44035): Monday and Wednesday: Noon to 6:00pm. - Lorain Public Library System Main Branch located at 351 West 6th Street in Lorain (44052): Wednesday: 4:00pm to 7:00pm. - Lorain County Office on Aging – Preferred Site for Seniors - located at 534 South Abbe Road in Elyria (4035): Tuesday and Thursday: 10:00am to 2:00pm. First Federal Savings of Lorain: Super Weekends (Friday from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, Saturday from 9:00am to 1:00pm): February 27th - February 28th, March 13th - March 14th, March 27th - March 28th, April 10th - April 11th. By walk in (on first come, first served basis): - Elyria Public Library System West River Branch - Super Saturdays - located at 1194 West River Road in Elyria (44035): February 7th, February 21st, March 7th, March 21st, April 4th, and April 11th: 10:00am to 3:00pm. NOTE: For at least Super Saturdays at the Elyria Library: People line up outside the library and get a number, and when the library opens, #1 picks the time they want an appointment for that morning or afternoon, and so on, until all appointment slots are scheduled. People then leave and come back for their appointment if it is much later in the day. Typically can even fit in extra people who show up toward the end of the shift as well, with little wait. Post-season returns: Beginning Monday April 13th, 2026, call United Way of Greater Lorain to schedule an appointment.

Application process

- Beginning Tuesday January 20th, 2025: Schedule online at https://www.loraincountyfreetaxprep.org or call 2-1-1 to make an appointment. - If needing multiple years completed, please schedule multiple (maximum of two) back-to-back appointments. Note: Post-season tax return appointments may be scheduled beginning after Monday April 13th, 2026.

Description

Offers free tax preparation assistance and electronic filing for low- to moderate-income households, particularly those eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit. Will complete returns for 2025 and back taxes for 2020 through 2024 should be completed during post season. Completes amendments for returns that were originally prepared by Lorain County Free Tax Prep. NOTE: Only prepares state and federal returns.
