Helps to prevent diseases spread through food by making sure food is prepared and stored safely. Follows up on complaints. Provides the following permits, licenses, and inspectional services (individual department phone numbers are listed behind each description): rat and rabies control, environmental health, nuisance complaints, landfill, trash truck, well water, and septic inspections (225-4362); plumbing permits and inspections (225-4421); housing inspections outside of the Dayton city limits (225-4428); food service operator licenses, bar, grocery, restaurant, swimming pool, hotel, and mobile home inspections (225-4460); lead paint poisoning preventions programs, information about lead paint hazards, and inspections for the presence of lead paint in homes (225-5553); and vending machines, mobile home park, motel, and mobile food service inspections (225-5915).

1. Set and maintain minimum levels of sanitation in places preparing and/or serving food to the public. 2. Investigate any food related complaints/illness. 3. Educate public about safe food handling practices. 4. Provide inspection and consultation services for food service operators and their operations. 5. Ensure all food service operations conform to Section 3732 of the Ohio Revised Code.

Restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, school cafeterias, caterers, and other permanent facilities that sell food are required to be licensed under the Risk Program

Protects Ashland County from foodborne illness. In the event that a foodborne outbreak does occur, epidemiologic action is taken by the Health District to control the outbreak and bring it to a conclusion. Also provides the licensing and inspection of all Food Service Operations, Vending Machine Operations, Retail Food Establishments, and Temporary Food and Mobile FSO/RFE within the jurisdiction of the Health Districts.
