Institute for Learning in Retirement is a community-based organization whose goal is to encourage life-long learning for persons in retirement from every walk of life. At its heart is an academic program of courses designed by its members to suit their interests and taught by knowledgeable instructors. Courses encourage study and discussion but require no assignments, nor tests, nor writing of papers. They are simply for the enjoyment of learning. ILR offers three eight-week sessions each year: fall, winter, and spring. Four or five courses are offered each session.

Provides training in basic mediation, conflict resolution, and de-escalation to individuals, agencies and organizations. Volunteer mediation opportunities are available for those who complete the training program.

Provides professional continuing education sessions for professional social workers and others working with the aging populations. Participants earn social worker CEU credits.

Offers Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training. The training teaches safe and effective approaches to handling crisis incidents involving a mentally ill individual. Also offers various CEU workshops.

Provides in-service visits and presentations for school personnel and students on the topic of Tourette's Syndrome. May speak to other groups if staffing permits. Areas covered include diagnostic criteria, specific classroom strategies and techniques for managing associated disorders such as Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Continuing education credits (CEUs) may be available.

Provides classes and professional certifications in a variety of career areas for those who are looking to change or to start a career. Programs areas include, but are not limited to: law enforcement, truck driving, welding and fabrication, industrial technology, early childhood education, culinary arts, home inspection, and nursing (LPN).

Provides a system where eligible individuals may audit credit or non-credit classes on a space-available basis.

Provides a wide variety of non-credit programs that draw from the broad academic disciplines of the Case Western University and the heritage of Jewish learning from Siegal College. Offers life long learning opportunities for residents of Northeastern Ohio.

Provides courses for adults who are seeking specific learning experiences on a full-time or short-term basis for personal, academic, or occupational development.

Offers professional development opportunities. Most trainings require no prior knowledge of the topic and many of the trainings teach participants how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders.

Connect residents to economic, social and educational opportunities. Ruth's Boutique provides hygiene items. Provide educational opportunites such as Bridges out of Poverty, Getting Ahead in a Just Gettin' by World and Mental Health First Aid and well as Lunch and Learn sessions with local professional organizations.

Our clients take part in an 11-week course. The first 2 weeks are Career Boot Camp where students learns the ins-and-outs of the employment landscape including soft skills training, resumes and cover letters and financial advice. The final 8 weeks are devoted to CompTIA A+ class. After the exams, we help students complete paid internship opportunities or obtain employment!
