Newark Fire has 2 Home Safety Inspectors that will come to your home at no cost, to inspect, assess, and make recommendations to eliminate potentially hazardous conditions and to ensure that the individual or family has a plan to deal with emergencies should they arise.

The program will track participants’ progress to monitor improvements.

The Safeguard our Seniors or S.O.S program is part of the "Good Neighbor" concept of community policing and designed to ensure the safety and basic needs for those who are elderly, shut-in, disabled , or with special needs. Once part of the program a deputy will stop by at clients residence for a visit and check in on them. Visits are intended to help the senior stay connected, feel less lonely, ward off depression, social isolation and stress. A safety evaluation of the clients home will be completed by a sheriff's deputy.

Topics include: safety issues, drug and substance abuse through the D.A.R.E. school program home and commercial security surveys, robbery prevention education, bunco/fraud prevention, and neighborhood watch groups. Also makes vacation security checks of citizens' homes.

These classes are more in-depth than the SLIP program and include exercises to help with balance. The classes address the fear of falling, balance, and exercise. Classes meet once a week for eight weeks.

Operates a poison hotline. Does not provide pill identification services. Offers information and education on poison prevention and treatment. Provides literature and speakers on toxic products, poison prevention and treatment.

Offers interactive, small group, evidence-based workshop that meets for eight (8) weekly sessions. This initiative raises awareness about home safety hazards and provides proactive solutions to prevent emergencies. Services offered include: Smoke Detector Installation, Home Safety Visits and Fire Escape Route Planning.

Fall Prevention workshops are offered as part of our Senior Program. This exercise program focuses on improving balance.
