Division of Watercraft is responsible for boating safety, education, and law enforcement on all waters of the state. This statewide area includes the near-shore area along 451 miles of the Ohio River, approximately half the entire surface area of Lake Erie, more than 605 inland lakes, and over 60,000 miles of inland streams, rivers, and other waterways. The Division administers and enforces all laws regarding identification, numbering, titling, use, and operation of recreational boats on Ohio’s waters. It conducts water safety education programs and develops boating facilities on major water areas of the state.

Provides swimming lessons for various levels of experience as well as age groups. Transportation is available for group lessons.

Provides swimming instruction for all ages and levels of ability, including infants and adults.

Provides a variety of classes that cover the safe operation of boats and on safety in and around water.

Responsible for the control and extinction of fires in urban and wilderness areas; the inspection of buildings and hillside property to ensure potential fire hazards; and the maintenance of equipment and trained firefighters necessary for a quick and efficient response to fires when they occur. Also, provides emergency medical services and ALS transportation to local hospitals.

To provide individuals and families with general water safety information in order to create an awareness of causes and prevention of water accidents, to develop a desire to be safe, and to encourage healthy and safe water recreation.
