Responsible for the control and extinction of fires in urban or wilderness areas; the inspection of buildings and hillside property to ensure potential fire hazards; and the maintenance of equipment and trained firefighters necessary for a quick and efficient response to fires when they occur.

Establishes, coordinates and sustains partnerships throughout Fairfield County to prepare for emergencies and to help the community return to normalcy when they occur. Provides collaboration leadership in the discernment of long-term needs for recovery and rehabilitation that can be most effectively met or assisted by the community. Provides advocacy for people most vulnerable to having their needs overlooked in public recovery planning processes.

Provides a 24-hour informational hotline featuring recorded messages which address the community's concerns about local or national disasters. Options are given on how to obtain information on how households and businesses can protect themselves against known disaster issues and on how to get specific questions answered by appropriate agency personnel.

Provides coordination and support in the time of need during a disaster incident, or situation and to see that all available support and resources are secured for the safety and welfare of the communities and citizens of Muskingum County. Also supports the needs of emergency service departments and personnel to the extent of training, education, material items, and financial support when appropriate. We work to develope emergency plans and help other agencies with developing their plans. We conduct exercises on a regular basis to test the plans we have developed. The agency communicates with all local, state, and federal agencies that may be utilized in the scope of duties performed by this agency when logistics and financial services are required for our county in a disaster or large-scale incident situation.

Administers a county-wide emergency management program to coordinate governmental and non-governmental response to disasters, assist in the development of emergency preparedness plans, and provide training to local emergency personnel.

Local office implements strategies to make Licking County safe from terrorist threats or attacks in compliance with government guidelines. FEMA will only be in the County during a declared Presidential Disaster at which point they will open a Disaster Recovery Center (DRC).
