The Mansfield YMCA and LIVESTRONG are teaming up to provide a physical activity program for cancer survivors in our community. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a twelve-week, small group program designed for adult cancer survivors. Our goal is to help participants build muscle mass and muscle strength, increase flexibility and endurance, and improve functional ability. Additional goals include reducing the severity of therapy side effects, preventing unwanted weight changes, and improving energy levels and self-esteem. A final goal of the program is to assist participants in developing his or her own physical fitness program so they can continue to practice a healthy lifestyle, not only as part of their recovery but as a way of life. In addition to the physical benefits, the program provides participants with a supportive environment and a feeling of community with their fellow survivors, YMCA staff, and members. YMCA fitness instructors work with each participant to fit the program to their individual needs. The instructors are trained in the elements of cancer, post rehab exercise, and supportive cancer care. The program is conducted outside of medical facilities to emphasize that LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is about health, not a disease.

Provides an online network that offers individuals with cancer the opportunity to share experiences and connect with people who have a similar cancer experiences, interests and concerns.

Provides information and support for cancer patients and their families. Offers referral to resources (including financial assistance and clinical trials), help with transportation arrangements, and assistance with health insurance. Answers questions about the disease and provides general information about cancer.

Provides crisis telephone counseling, information, education, outreach, and referral services to caregivers, patients and families. The Coping Connection is staffed by licensed social workers and counselors who have training in oncology and family therapy.

Program participants are eligible for services up to 5 years unless in active treatment. Does not cover basic living expenses such as rent, mortgages, utility payments or food. Provides medical supplies and equipment to cancer patients through a medical loan cabinet. Assists with purchase of prescription cancer medications. Assists with doctor/hospital bills after insurance, as decided by the Cancer Club members.

Provides support and information for individuals concerned about breast cancer from someone who has been there - a breast cancer survivor. This program helps breast cancer patients and their loved ones address the emotional, physical and social issues related to breast cancer.
