Peer-To-Peer | Nami Southern Ohio

Provides an 8-week course (2 hours/week) on recovery for individuals with mental illness who are interested in establishing and maintaining wellness. Participants gain an understanding of issues pertinent to their diagnoses and recovery. The course uses a combination of lectures, interactive exercises and structured group processes. Topics covered include: How to reach and stay in recovery; How to write an advance directive; Information about different diagnoses; How to deal with past and current problems.

Offers one-on-one assistance to help individuals determine which private, public, state and local benefits they may be eligible to receive. Includes benefits such as Medicaid, Medicare Part-D, SSI, SSD, food assistance through SNAP (food stamps), HEAP, Golden Buckeye/Ohio's Best Rx Card, Homestead Exemption, prescription assistance programs, housing and many others. After completing the survey, individuals will be given a list of services for which they may be eligible. Benefits counselors will follow-up with the client and provide applications if needed.

Provides foster care for emotionally troubled children (including those with severe emotional issues as well as those who may have suffered abuse or neglect) whose needs may be greater than those addressed by traditional foster care. Aims to build children's self-confidence; improve communication and interpersonal skills; reduce risk taking behavior; and boost academic performance. Also provides families for groups of siblings and older adolescents (who are often more difficult to place). Foster parents are trained to use parenting techniques designed for children with emotional and behavioral problems. Provides an "intentional friendship" program that matches adults recovering from mental illness with volunteers who offer support and friendship. Support is offered through face-to-face contacts and/or by phone. Matches adult volunteers who do not have a mental illness with severely mentally ill clients. Participants and volunteers also take part in social-recreational group activities, health and wellness activities, and general socialization for the purpose of friendship.
