Volunteer Guardians are substitute decision-makers for people who have mental disabilities and are unable to make informed personal decisions in their own best interest. Guardians do many things to ensure the quality of life for the people they serve. They make informed, major life decisions concerning medical care, therapies, living environments, and even funeral arrangements. But, guardians also do the "little things" – and the little things mean a lot.

Guardianships are for persons declared incompetent by the court and unable to manage their affairs. Will help investigate the need for services for those who feel they may be eligible. Conservatorship is under the jurisdiction of the probate court. The Probate Court recommends that all applicants seek legal counsel.

Volunteers provide guardianship for older adults, disabled, and developmentally disabled persons in nursing homes who have no other support people in their lives capable of making health related decisions; individuals may be referred by nursing home staff, family & friends, or agency staff.

Provides advocacy and management of individuals' finances, health issues, and other affairs when someone is deemed a ward of the state by a court by either volunteers or professional staff, depending on the complexity of the issues. Emergency guardianship is available if needed. Services provided may include assistance with health care and financial decisions, transportation to and from appointments and assistance with nursing home placement.

Evaluates cases for older adults, people with disabilities, and people with life-threatening conditions related to advance directives and wills; financial powers of attorney; survivorship deeds; transfer on death affidavits; and quit claim deeds.

The court may appoint, after hearing and investigation, a guardian for a minor or for an adult who is found to be incompetent to take proper care of himself or his property. A guardian, with court supervision, is responsible for making personal and/or financial decisions for the ward. Court supervision is accomplished, in part, through the filing of reports and accountings by the guardian. Both a minor and an adult ward have a number of rights and protections to insure against an unnecessary or ineffective guardianship, including, for the adult ward, the right to be represented by an attorney.
