Provides information about the West Nile Virus, a virus which is transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito and/or rabies. West Nile Virus causes mild, flu-like symptoms in healthy people and serious inflammations of the brain and spinal cord in people who are elderly or who have compromised immune systems. Rabies is an infectious disease transmitted by animal bite to humans that can result in paralysis and death if not treated. Hotline staff can provide information on symptoms, control, and other issues related to both diseases.

The Environmental Health Division is responsible for the following programs: body art, boy/girl scout camp inspections, food protectipn program, harmful algal blooms, household sewage treatment systems, manufactured home parks, private water systems, public health nuisance complaints, real estate/subdivisions, recreation park camps, school environmental health, smoke-free workplace, swimming pools and spas and vector-borne and zoonotic disease.

Monitors beaches along the Lake Erie shoreline for E. coli and other harmful bacteria. Water samples are collected at the beaches and the results are reported to the public. If the bacterial levels are greater than the recreational standard, a sign is posted at the beach to warn swimmers of the risk of illness.
