Responsible for inspecting homes and other structures to ensure that they meet building codes and standards in the City of Amherst. Provides interpretation and enforcement of national and state building codes as well as other applicable local codified ordinances and regulations governing property maintenance, construction and land use. Supervises construction activities; acceptance of permit applications; issuance of all building, mechanical and miscellaneous permits; and verification of plan compliance with applicable building and zoning codes.

The Environmental Health Division contracts with the Ohio Manufactured Homes Commission to perform annual inspections of manufactured home parks.

Provides enforcement of Ohio Building Codes for residential and commercial construction. These building codes provide the department's staff with guidelines to help ensure the health and safety of residents; also provides consultation with prospective builders and developers, plan review services, inspections and distribution of code information.

Responsible for the control and extinguishment of fires, the inspection of buildings and hill side property, maintenance of equipment and trained fire-fighters. Also provides emergency medical and rescue services.

Provides a systematic exterior inspection program for all residential properties in the city of University Heights. Reports violations to the homeowner and establishes a time line for completion of necessary repairs.

Issues permits for all construction of buildings and structures, and performs the required inspections required by each permit. Additionally, the Building Department registers contractors who are working in Avon Lake.

Provides supervision of construction activities, building applications, building and mechanical permits, registration of contractors, compliance with Ohio Building Code, International Residential Code, and Westlake Zoning Code.
