The purpose of Neighborhood Development/Community Organizing is to revitalize a designated neighborhood/residential area. Empowering residents to make positive changes that can be self-sustained by the neighborhood long-term. All initiatives for neighborhood organizing are resident-driven for maximum support, implementation and follow-through.

Provides organizational assistance to neighborhood and/or business groups and organizations. Assists in planning and implementing community-based projects and programs.

Provides information on social justice issues that may be coming before legislators at the state and federal levels. Lobbies legislators on these issues. Makes presentations on the Catholic church's social justice teachings, their implications for today, and how to take action.

Provides assistance in organizing neighborhood block clubs. Focus of organizing is neighborhood safety and involvement.

Provides assistance with organizing tenants so that they can address common issues they may have with their landlords (such as health, safety, property neglect, etc.). Goal is to use collective action so that the landlord addresses these issues.

Assists residents in solving problems and communicating concerns about safety and other neighborhood-related issues to the appropriate municipal departments. Meets periodically with residents of particular buildings or streets.

Works with area block clubs that have come together around safety, housing, schools, and other issues that affect residents. Provides training and technical assistance with organizing skills where requested.

Provides assistance in organizing activities that facilitate and build productive interdependent personal relationships among the residents, businesses, stakeholders, service providers, and politicians and empower them to work together and develop leadership capacity to solve problems and to achieve tangible, measurable and lasting results of mutual benefits to the neighborhood. Current neighborhood-wide issue committees that mobilize community members to act on issues that affect them include: schools, environment, safety, garden and green space, and housing/planning.

Uses volunteer committees to identify health and human service needs, work to address community problems, to distribute funds for programs, and promotes understanding of and collaboration with the public health and human service sectors through the public policy committee and other community building efforts.

Conducts a monthly meeting to discuss issues and programs affecting the blind and vision impaired.

Provides community development block grant funds on a competitive basis every three years for projects aimed at housing and economic development infrastructure and parks and recreation largely in low and moderate income target areas.

Goal is to use collective action so that the landlord addresses these issues. Educates and activates tenants to gain their rights under the Landlord-Tenant Law.

Works to reactivate existing block clubs and to build new ones, with an aim towards helping citizens express their thoughts effectively to policy makers. Provides training on basic skills like running meetings, getting neighbors out to events, establishing boards and by-laws, identifying issues and carrying out plans to improve a neighborhood's quality of life.

Coordinates 10 neighborhood associations in the Lima City area. Works with residents, churches, educators, businesses and organizations to bring the community together to address concerns and issues that affect their neighborhoods.

Assists neighborhood residents in organizing around common issues and in formulating and implementing plans to address community concerns with policymakers. Helps coordinate and develop block clubs and provides services to residents. Provides services aimed at preventing crime and juvenile delinquency. Service includes community-trained mediators who can mediate neighborhood disputes in eligible areas.

Assists neighborhood groups in the development of community vegetable gardens on vacant lots. Includes help with organizational planning and garden site design. Also offers educational workshops, access to resources, use of equipment, such as rototillers, etc. and a communications network.

Provides training and assistance to residents in starting and running community groups to ensure safety and communication on important neighborhood issues.

Promotes the rights of workers by educating the broader community about workplace abuses, helping workers improve employment standards, and supporting workers' rights to organize. Offers educational programs, speakers, and printed materials about workers' issues, such as workers' rights and free trade. Offers workers the opportunity to report abuse and violations of wage theft and other worker issues that may be system wide. Does not provide direct services for individuals, but does offer membership for persons interested in supporting workers rights.

Provides classes to teach specific leadership skills (e.g., time management, leadership styles, conflict resolution). Classes are tailored to specific organizations' needs. Classes assists participants in discovering the strengths they bring to a productive working relationship with community, neighborhood, business, and government institutions. Includes the history and current status of Cleveland's neighborhoods and the types of planning and skills individuals need to serve the community, their families, and themselves. Agency also community members with phone assistance on any topic related to community organizing.
