The Home Energy Assistance Program provides eligible Ohioans assistance paying an electric bill or assistance paying for heating or air conditioning repairs. Eligible customers may also receive a portable air conditioner or fan. The program assists low-income households with an older household member (60 years or older), or households that can provide physician documentation that cooling assistance is needed for a household member's health. Eligible households can receive up to $300 if they are a customer of a regulated utility, or $500 if they are a customer of unregulated utilities such as electric cooperatives and municipal utilities. The benefit can be a combination of a portable air conditioner, fan and/or utility assistance. Utility assistance is applied to a customer’s utility bill or applied to central air conditioning repair costs.

The shelter also has adopted a new policy regarding popular dogs that a number of people want to adopt. While a stray dog is being held during the mandatory legal holding period at the shelter, interested people may place a sealed bid on the canine. The bid must be at least $1 over the regular adoption cost. Bids will remain sealed until 8am the first day the dog is available for adoption with it going to the highest bidder. Any additional funds generated from the bid will be used for medical expenses for shelter dogs.
