Handles reports of environmental emergencies involving the releases of oil, hazardous chemicals, or radioactive materials into the air, land or water. Examples may include chemical spills on highways and in waterways as well as toxic emissions from industry or other environmental crimes/violations. Provides an emergency response team that offers coordination and technical assistance for hazardous material containment. Works in conjunction with the federal environmental protection agency to ensure investigation and cleanup of contaminated sites.
The goal of Washington County Local Emergency Planning Committee is to save lives and protect property by developing programs and procedures for emergency operation capabilities that mitigate the effects of, prepare for, respond to, and recover from planned or unplanned chemical releases. Provides an online form to report hazardous material/chemical spills. Committee meets 2nd Wednesday of every month at 2pm at 204 Davis Avenue - Suite C - Marietta.
Investigates reports of health nuisances and determines follow-up actions. Will investigate the following: * Malfunctioning household sewage disposal/treatment devices * Garbage /refuse storage and removal * Public swimming pools, bathing places, camps, parks trailer parks, and other places of public gathering * Private water supply systems * Abandoned wells and cisterns Does not enforce any building or housing maintenance code. For those issues, call city/village offices or Wayne County Building Department.
Provides field inspection, enforcement activities including water testing (when a mining operation is involved), and project oversight. Handles public complaints and other enforcement actions at active mining operations, mining company land reclamation sites, solution mining sites, injection well facilities (also called fracking), and oil and gas drilling and production operations.
