Operates the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, which monitors a statistical sample of hospital emergency rooms for injuries associated with consumer products. Maintains free hotline to provide information about recalls and to receive reports on unsafe products and product-related injuries. Strengthens our community by preventing unintended pregnancy and empowering individuals with the knowledge, opportunity, and freedom to make private decisions about their reproductive and sexual health. PPSWO provides family planning services, this includes services for birth control, STD testing and treatment, annual and breast exams, pregnancy test and options counseling, UTI, Trich, yeast and bacterial vaginosis testing and treatment, PEP and PREP testing and prescriptions as well as comprehensive sex education training.

Provides information and answers questions regarding food safety issues such as storage, handling, preparation, product dating and content, seasonal foods, preventing foodborne illness, and power outages. Publicizes warnings to the public to avoid foods that may be a health hazard such as foods that are contaminated or contain potentially hazardous ingredients. Informs the public of occurrences that may constitute a public health emergency and provides safety instructions.

Provides information on water boiling alerts which are issued to the community in an effort to protect citizens from unsafe drinking water. An alert is issued after positive tests (samples for fecal coliforms, changes in turbidity measurements), or water main breaks. When an alert is issued, information regarding that particular incident will be publicized. In general, when an alert is issued water should be boiled for three minutes and cooled before drinking. Also, water should be let to run out of the tap for about five minutes before using the first time after shut-off.

Issues bulletins and informs the public of conditions which are conducive to the development and spread of a specific communicable disease. Advises the public of an outbreak that puts them at risk.

Provides safety information and answers questions about food, nutrition, dietary supplements, food labeling, cosmetics, pet food, food additives, food biotechnology, blood products, vaccines, and medical devices. Works to maintain air quality by providing air quality analysis and information to make the public aware and limit ozone formation. Monitors and provides information regarding air quality in Northeast Ohio. Offers information about precautions and actions to take to limit pollution.

Provides information about the West Nile Virus, a virus which is transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito and/or rabies. West Nile Virus causes mild, flu-like symptoms in healthy people and serious inflammations of the brain and spinal cord in people who are elderly or who have compromised immune systems. Rabies is an infectious disease transmitted by animal bite to humans that can result in paralysis and death if not treated. Hotline staff can provide information on symptoms, control, and other issues related to both diseases.

Performs services to protect and promote public health in Defiance County. This is done by regulation enforcement, inspections and providing educational materials and programs for the public. The Environmental Health Division is responsible for the following programs: body art, boy/girl scout camp inspections, food protectipn program, harmful algal blooms, household sewage treatment systems, manufactured home parks, private water systems, public health nuisance complaints, real estate/subdivisions, recreation park camps, school environmental health, smoke-free workplace, swimming pools and spas and vector-borne and zoonotic disease.

Provides information about if and when a water boil alert has been issued for the whole or part of the City of Medina. Will also instruct those affected about steps they should take to safely use tap water during the duration of the alert.

Monitors beaches along the Lake Erie shoreline for E. coli and other harmful bacteria. Water samples are collected at the beaches and the results are reported to the public. Offers a web site where the information is posted and can be accessed by the public. If the bacterial levels are greater than the recreational standard, a sign is posted at the beach to warn swimmers of the risk of illness.

Provides information to the public about appliances, clothing, electronics, electrical power devices, furniture, household products, lighting/lighter products, sports/exercise equipment, toys, and other consumer products that are subject to voluntary or mandatory recall or about which safety concerns have been registered.

Responsible for the control and extinction of fires in urban or wilderness areas; the inspection of buildings and hillside property to ensure potential fire hazards; and the maintenance of equipment and trained firefighters necessary for a quick and efficient response to fires when they occur.
