Provides information about the West Nile Virus, a virus which is transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito and/or rabies. West Nile Virus causes mild, flu-like symptoms in healthy people and serious inflammations of the brain and spinal cord in people who are elderly or who have compromised immune systems. Rabies is an infectious disease transmitted by animal bite to humans that can result in paralysis and death if not treated. Hotline staff can provide information on symptoms, control, and other issues related to both diseases.

Performs services to protect and promote public health in Defiance County. This is done by regulation enforcement, inspections and providing educational materials and programs for the public. The Environmental Health Division is responsible for the following programs: body art, boy/girl scout camp inspections, food protectipn program, harmful algal blooms, household sewage treatment systems, manufactured home parks, private water systems, public health nuisance complaints, real estate/subdivisions, recreation park camps, school environmental health, smoke-free workplace, swimming pools and spas and vector-borne and zoonotic disease.

Monitors beaches along the Lake Erie shoreline for E. coli and other harmful bacteria. Water samples are collected at the beaches and the results are reported to the public. Offers a web site where the information is posted and can be accessed by the public. If the bacterial levels are greater than the recreational standard, a sign is posted at the beach to warn swimmers of the risk of illness.

Responsible for control and extinguishing of fires in an urban setting; provide emergency medical services to the community the inspection of buildings and property to eliminate potential fire hazards; provide community wide fire safety, first aid, CPR, and life safety education; and training of firefighters and emergency medical technicians to maintain high quality of service in a timely manner.

Provides information and answers questions regarding food safety issues such as storage, handling, preparation, product dating and content, seasonal foods, preventing foodborne illness, and power outages. Publicizes warnings to the public to avoid foods that may be a health hazard such as foods that are contaminated or contain potentially hazardous ingredients. Accepts consumer complaints regarding problems with meat, poultry, or egg products only. Handles complaints on issues such as incorrect packaging or foreign objects (plastic, glass, etc.) in food items.

Maintains the National Injury Information Clearinghouse, conducts investigations of alleged unsafe or defective products, and establishes product safety standards. Assists consumers in evaluating the comparative safety of products and conducts education programs to increase consumer awareness. Operates the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, which monitors a statistical sample of hospital emergency rooms for injuries associated with consumer products. Maintains free hotline to provide information about recalls and to receive reports on unsafe products and product-related injuries. In Centerville only, dispatches officers to the scene of a crime in progress or a police emergency incident (call 911). Dispatches officers to the scene of incidents where citizens need non emergency assistance (call 937-433-7661). Also investigates crimes and reports of missing persons, fingerprints arrestees, and investigates incidents of alleged police misconduct.
