Guardianship is for persons who are deemed by the court as incapable of managing their own person and/or affairs (minors and incompetent adults). The guardian's activities regarding their ward are monitored by the court. Prospective wards can contest the guardianship and if indigent, can request an attorney at the court's expense. The guardian can assume responsibility for the management of the person, estate, or both. Conservatorship is a voluntary trust relationship between the conservator and the conservatee who is a mentally competent and physically disabled adult. The conservatee consents to the arrangement and chooses the duties of the conservator.

Adult Protective Services is responsible for investigating reports of abuse, neglect or exploitation of adults and provides services to assist in maintaining their safety and protection. The Mercer County Sheriff's Office is the point of contact for after hours emergencies.
