Investigates reports of abuse, neglect and exploitation of vulnerable older adults aged 60 and over in Marion County. Allegations of neglect also include self-neglect by an elderly person. When calls are received by APS, the case manager evaluates any risk to the safety and well-being of alleged victims. If they find that there is a risk, the case manager works with families, social service agencies and other community resources to meet the person’s needs and to improve the situation.
Accepts reports of abuse/neglect during business hours.

Athens DJFS investigates and evaluates all reports of suspected abuse, neglect and exploitation of adults age 60 and older in Athens County. These adults may be handicapped due to aging, or they may have physical or mental impairments that prevent them from providing for their own care and protection. When funding and services are available, adults who experience abuse, neglect and/or exploitation are offered support for protection and self-sufficiency
Provides guardianships to individuals declared incompetent by the court and who are unable to manage their affairs. Will also help investigate the need for services for those individuals who feel they may be eligible and can provide information and guidance about services for individuals with developmental disabilities, makes referrals, and advocates on client's behalf.

Post Mortem Estate Administration
Appoints a guardian for individuals who are found to be incompetent to handle their own affairs. A guardian may be appointed for either an incompetent adult or a minor. A guardian may be appointed either as guardian of the person, the estate or both. A guardian may be appointed with a limited power to make restricted or specific decisions. The Court may appoint an emergency guardian for 72 hours. The Probate Court also grants petitions for Conservatorships, a voluntary trust in which one party acts with court supervision on behalf of a competent, but physically infirm adult. Summit County Senior Visitor Program provides visitors for those under guardianship.
