Monroe County Adult Protective Services investigates reports of suspected abuse, neglect and exploitation of adults age 60 and over and living in our community. Our agency collaborates with local law enforcement, medical providers, and other community social service providers to bring timely health and safety services to older and/or disabled individuals.

The adult protective services worker will assess all such complaints, and if necessary, arrange or provide a wide variety of services to reduce or eliminate the endangerment of these at-risk adults. Emergencies are investigated within 24 hours, and all other reports within three working days.

Operating under state laws that protect individuals with disabilities from abuse, neglect, misappropriation and other negative incidents, the Knox County Board of DD has a system to report, investigate, review, remedy, and analyze incidents adversely affecting the health and safety of individuals and to monitor preventative actions taken to ensure health and safety. If abuse or neglect of an individual with disabilities is suspected, it can be reported to KCBDD and all allegations will be reviewed by the Major Unusual Incident Dept. (MUI), and if warranted, filed and investigated in an attempt to determine whether the allegation is substantiated or not.

Guardianship program for severely mentally disabled persons who are identified by the mental health/developmental disabled systems for services. All referrals must go through clinical issues meetings or the case manager supervisor.

Conservatorship is a voluntary trust relationship between the conservator and the conservatee who is a mentally competent and physically disabled adult. The conservatee consents to the arrangement and chooses the duties of the conservator.

Note: Reporting a major incident does not summon assistance, but starts documentation. Contact 9-1-1 if the individual is at serious risk.
