A housing counselor will work with clients to identify rental resources that meet individual needs. Will review credit reports (or FABCO rental report), review income and household budget, create an action plan, and assist with an online search for current, available properties for rent. Can also review current leases, document any issues with landlords, and discuss options for landlord/tenant disputes. Will also help you file a fair housing compliant if necessary.

Provides empowerment training focused on building long-term financial stability for those in recovery and/or re-entry.

Offers mortgage foreclosure assistance for individuals and families who are in danger of foreclosure or have already been foreclosed upon. Provides counseling for clients who are facing foreclosure due to property tax defaults. Assesses each case and then determines if a staff or volunteer attorney can be assigned to the client.

SEOLS provides advice and representation for tenants who live in private or subsidized housing. Our goal is to preserve and improve the quality of the tenant’s home. Available for those individuals that are unable to manage their financial affairs due to poor health or other problems. Services are also provided to those individuals confined to nursing homes or other institutions of care. Services provided are maintenance of income, banking, budgeting, shopping, and case management.

Provides representation to low-income clients by 3rd-year law students, operating under the supervision of faculty. Cases handled include consumer home repair, misdemeanor criminal cases (in select suburban courts see eligibility), benefits advocacy, Social Security Disability appeals, health care issues and guardianship removal. The clinic CANNOT handle family law cases, health care personal injury or malpractice cases, bankruptcy or felonies, does not help with employment law concerns, and does not assist with expunging of criminal records.

Deposits federal benefit payments such as Social Security, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), veterans benefits, and railroad retirement benefits directly into the recipient's bank account, credit union account, or electronic transfer account. Money is deposited into the account on the designated payment day. Protects individuals from having their benefits checks lost or stolen.

Provides a pre-home buyers' course on budgeting, basic banking, credit and debt management, tax tips, the home buying process, asset creation, predatory lending, and financial goal setting. Clients receive a certificate upon completion of the course and are then entitled to one-on-one counseling and advice on specific financial matters.

Provides food pantry, monthly food distribution. Individuals can walk through the pantry and pick from a variety of frozen, perishable, and non-perishable food items.

Provides assistance in obtaining a credit report and explaining the report to the client. Also explains who has access to the report and how to correct any errors found in it.

Provides counseling and information to those in foreclosure or who are facing foreclosure. Will provide information concerning the client's rights and responsibilities and will attempt to work out solutions with lenders in an effort to save the home. Will provide information and counseling to those faced with foreclosure due to past due property taxes.
