The Taxpayer Advocate Service not only helps individual and business taxpayers settle disputes with the IRS, but also tries to repair the larger, systemic flaws that cause trouble for taxpayers and IRS employees alike.

Coordinates the resolution of taxpayer complaints and problems involving the Department of Revenue. Ensures the Department of Revenue is adhering to the Taxpayer Bill of Rights and acts as an advocate for taxpayers when needed.

Provides information and guidance for individuals who are having difficulty meeting their financial obligations and, as a result, are faced with a loss of their credit rating, foreclosure and loss of their home or property, IRS tax audit, or bankruptcy. Offers a Debt Relief Hotline to discuss credit card debt, a Mortgage Relief Hotline to discuss issues about home mortgages, a Tax Relief Hotline to discuss federal income tax audits, and a Bankruptcy Advice Hotline to discuss legal issues regarding bankruptcy.

In certain cases, the clinic represents taxpayers before the United States Tax Court. The clinic negotiates and resolves contested matters with the IRS. The clinic is staffed by law students who are trained in tax law and supervised by the clinic director who is a practicing tax attorney and faculty member.
