May be called to apt./house where landlord is trying to evict a tenant without a court order - may also be called for other disputes, the officer will advise and protect the landlord or the tenant depending on the dispute in question.

Provides legal assistance in the following housing areas: wrongful evictions and landlord/tenant disputes, foreclosures, public housing and Section 8 disputes, housing discrimination, utility shut-offs, and other housing-related issues.

Handles housing disputes involving legal issues in the city such as filings regarding disputes over returned rental security deposit amounts up to claims of $15,000. Provides eviction hearings and a mechanism for tenants disputing the return of a security deposit or other financial issue with a landlord to file with the court.

Provides first month's rent and security deposit to help veterans establish permanent housing. Will also help with advocacy and rent to help veterans stay in their current housing. If needed, clients are provided with eviction prevention help, benefits assistance, landlord/tenant assistance, and case management to ensure that they are connected to available community resources and VA benefits. Program may provide incentives to landlords to secure housing for Veterans with rental application barriers. Clients do not have to stay in the county they reside in (they may move from county to county).

Provides information to those renting property regarding their rights and responsibilities when dealing with landlords who have not been providing what was promised in a lease, landlord harassment, rental accommodation for tenants who may need them and other issues pertaining to renting property for housing. Can review leases with those who are renting.

Evaluates cases related to problems with public and subsidized housing (Section 8, Housing Choice Voucher Program, buildings administered by the federal housing agency, and others) including: evictions; termination from subsidized housing programs; rent related matters or issues involving tenant groups, denial of applications for subsidized housing that are based on prior criminal history or a criminal background check; and claims for money damages related to tenancy.

Permits a tenant with complaints regarding housing conditions to deposit rent due into an escrow account until the dispute between the landlord and tenant is resolved. Most rent escrow disputes are automatically referred to the Dispute Resolution Program.

Provides advocacy services for persons who believe they have been discriminated against in housing (in the public or private sector whether rental units or purchased housing).
